A good origin story

I like so many others watch a fair amount of super hero movies. The one thing that has always sucked me in was a good organ story. The often creative ways that writers use to introduce the early lives of heroes draw audiences in and lead to the always needed prequel. I fashion myself a super hero not only at work but outside of it. I live a life that some people only dream of (in my mind) and I push forward no matter the challenge, obstacle, or random moment of laziness. If Wonder Woman, Black Widow, and Captain Marvel had a kid - it would be me all day.

Why am I so special? Well, I am really not. I'm just your average working human trying to pay my way through life

while enjoying a couple of things along the way. I show up and show out everyday. That's my brand and I deliver on it every single damn day. I have setbacks just like everyone else does. Things really don't always go my way. I just continue to start each day hopeful that I'll win at the end. I know this all sounds familiar to you because I am confident that this totally describes your life and you are also the hero in your story.

Now for where it all started....the wonderful streets of Brooklyn, New York (fill in the blank with your hometown). I was just a kid, doing kid things, but even though everyone knew I was different. I wasn't the type to follow the crowd. I had just as much fun riding my bike, watching TV, or reading a book. My mom spent a lot of time telling me that I was special and I totally fought against all of that. It wasn't until high school that I learned that I had some hero qualities.

I wasn't the coolest kid in school and I never thought of myself as popular. I prided myself on not being a jerk so most of the kids in my school knew my name and were cool with me. I remember being in every after school club as an observer. I preferred to work in the shadows. My biggest power was making everyone that I came in contact with feel special in their own unique way. Hanging out with me meant you always would fit in. Using that power made me really good at playing poker while cutting a class. Turns out, I read people really well. Let me set the record straight. I wasn't a mind reader but definitely skilled at anticipating how the cards would be played and who I could push into folding when I had no good cards.

I should have included a disclosure that said something like...I did bad things for good reasons or I was never caught therefore no crimes were committed. Nah, that's like owning up to things and I refuse to tarnish this "good-girl" persona I've built. I'll just say that my early days spent testing out my powers on the world are why I am the compliant do-gooder I am today.

So why share this story? Simple. Each of you reading this has a super power and that power came with a really good origin story. Today, I encourage you to take a moment and reflect on how you got to where you are now. Grab a coffee, tea, or a shot and relive those defining moments. Be warned, you will feel some things but also be informed that how you got to where you are is just as important as who you are today.

From one S|hero to another, keep making good choices.
